This walking tour highlights the important infrastructure surrounding the central square of Adelaide including Law Courts, GPO, Treasury Building and Adelaide Town Hall and the stories behind the facades. Victoria Square was originally envisioned to have the majority of government buildings facing it and we visit and discuss the importance of these buildings in South Australia’s history. Come and hear stories relating to a proposed pistol duel, a retail man with a vision, a heritage building which was moved to another location, the gold rush era in Victoria in the 1850’s, the progression of women in South Australia, a ground breaking land title system and many others.

This walking tour takes clients through the western part of North Adelaide and features villas and semi-detached houses built during the boom period of the 1880’s – learn about some of the early colonial families of Adelaide who lived here. A quiet area of North Adelaide is visited, trimming the fringe of the parklands where we see one of the largest sub-divisions in Adelaide back in the 1880’s and swing by a Priory, two Churches and many beautiful examples of built heritage mainly used for residential purposes. Discover some of the links between some of our prominent wealthy families in colonial Adelaide and how many of them were able to build some larger mansions in this part of North Adelaide. Contrasts can be seen with visual evidence of the working class cottages and row housing for those that would have struggled to make a living, including plasterers, limeburners, tea tasters, and artists.

This walk highlights the grand mansions of Brougham Place built to address the Park Lands setting and, in contrast continues to Lower North Adelaide, which features the Chichester Gardens subdivisions between Stanley, Melbourne & Jerningham Streets. Hear about the make up of the early population of North Adelaide with its German as well as Irish former residents. The style of architecture really highlights the former wealthy classes as well as the working classes who resided in the area. We discuss those who lived in Lower North Adelaide including former Lord Mayors of Adelaide, Politicians, Architects, Journalists, Ironmongers, Brewers, Bakers, Basketmakers and stories including a double murder/suicide back in the 1880’s. You will see what made and still makes this part of North Adelaide a desirable place to live as we roam through some leafy streets.

This tour features Montefiore Hill, Brougham Place and Palmer Place well known for their large mansions including Christ Church & Bishop’s Court, which date from the early 1850’s.
